“Trauma is not what happens to us, but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathetic witness.”

— Peter A. Levine

Trauma is a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that can have lasting adverse effects on an individual’s mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Trauma can be acute (resulting from a single event), chronic (repeated and prolonged exposure), or complex (exposure to varied, multiple traumatic events, often interpersonal in nature).

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Can occur post military combat, natural disasters, accidents, or violent assault.
  • Complex PTSD (C-PTSD): Arises from sustained, repeated trauma (i.e. childhood abuse, domestic violence).
  • Developmental Trauma: Disruptions in early life attachment and care, affecting a child’s emotional and cognitive development.
  • Secondary or Vicarious Trauma: Experienced by professionals exposed to others’ trauma (e.g., healthcare workers, first responders).
  • Historical and Intergenerational Trauma: Collective trauma experienced by groups and passed through generations.
